چکیده

Introduction: High resolution MRI at 7T suggests that T2* contrast may be sensitive to white matter composition and microstructure [1]. Preliminary histological and MRI results show that the T2* heterogeneity in white matter may be in part reflect its myelin content [2]. In this study, the quantitative correlation between T2* relaxation rate (R2*=1/ T2*) and diffusion fractional anisotropy (FA) in white matter was investigated in normal volunteers at 3T and 7T.

Assessment of Iron Deposition and White Matter Maturation in Infant Brains by Using Enhanced T2 Star Weighted Angiography (ESWAN): R2* versus Phase Values

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Iron deposition and white matter (WM) maturation are very important for brain development in infants. It has been reported that the R2* and phase values originating from the gradient-echo sequence could both reflect the iron and myelination. The aim of this study was to investigate age-related changes of R2* and phase value, and compare their performances for monitoring i...

Evaluation of White Matter Tracts in Autistic Individuals: A Review of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Studies

Introduction: Many cognitive and social deficits in autism are caused by abnormal functional connections between brain networks, which are manifested by impaired integrity of white matter tracts. White matter tracts are like the "highways" of the brain, which allow fast and efficient communication in different areas of the brain. The purpose of this article is to review the results of autism st...

Cognitive functions correlate with white matter architecture in a normal pediatric population: a diffusion tensor MRI study.

A possible relationship between cognitive abilities and white matter structure as assessed by magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was investigated in the pediatric population. DTI was performed on 47 normal children ages 5-18. Using a voxelwise analysis technique, the fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) were tested for significant correlations with Wechsler full-s...

Development of superficial white matter and its structural interplay with cortical gray matter in children and adolescents.

Healthy human brain undergoes significant changes during development. The developmental trajectory of superficial white matter (SWM) is less understood relative to cortical gray matter (GM) and deep white matter. In this study, a multimodal imaging strategy was applied to vertexwise map SWM microstructure and cortical thickness to characterize their developmental pattern and elucidate SWM-GM as...

Sexual Dimorphism in Human Brain Weight and Volume of Gray and White Matter in Normal and Neurodegenerative Subjects - A Stereological and Macroscopic Study

Purpose: This study is designed to determine the sex differences in brain weight and volume of left hemisphere and its gray and white matters in right-handed normal subjects and the right-handed subjects which were suffered from Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 72 normal human brains (38 male, 34 female), 11 brains suffered from Alzheimer (4 ...
